THE ACRYLIC AND WATERCOLOR PAINTER

Jeanne is primarily a self taught artist who has had some direction from classes at the
Peninsula Art School in Door County, WI. She paints watercolor on paper and acrylics on
canvas. Her paintings reveal the magic in the world depicted in brilliant colors and
wonderful light. Mystical animals, glowing still-lifes, her Windows series (portraits of people
and stories) and her Spirit Women series, are some of her subjects.
Artists that have fascinated her and influenced her style include Frida Kalo, Georgia
O'keeffe, Wolf Kahn and Andrew Wyeth. Teachers that have strongly influenced her from
Peninsula Art School include Margaret Lockwood, Craig Bleitz, William Doughty and Sharon
Crosbie.
ARTIST STATEMENT

"I paint relationships, interactions between light and shadow, between hues of color and
relationships between the objects, people and animals and their surroundings. I like
painting mystical moments, like when the winter light captures the color of ripe mangoes in
a glass bowl, or when a person is reflecting on a memory, or discovers some strength in
their spirit. These moments seem surreal, yet are often the base of what makes our
existence on earth meaningful. I hope my paintings take you in for a moment and make you
feel you can visit for a while.

I am initially inspired by the shape or curve of a face, and then the way the light has played
across that person, or by the collection of colors in a scene, or by an emotion that has
grabbed my heart. This artistic story I translate into a little world on paper or canvas. I
believe we are all connected and I am painting an awareness of that. I also love fantasy,
magic, and the celebration of life. In my spirit women series I want to capture the strength of
women, their ability to move forward through trials, to discover new roads to walk. Tied in
with all of this is my love of nature. You will see a lot of flora and fauna in my work.

My palette is the same, whether I paint acrylics on canvas, or watercolor on paper. I love
shades of purple and violet. Acrylics give me a sense of freedom to let the paint take me to
where I had not planned to go. It dries fast, so I can layer many washes. I like the depth that
creates and the richness of color. I like that I can change my mind halfway through the paint,
the way the paint runs and mixes on the paper, like colors in a river. I want my paintings to
glow with no dead colors. I want the painting to capture light, let it bounce around the
painting and back to the viewer.

I hope my paintings can increase your awareness of the moments I am painting about,
open eyes to see the world in a new way and increase awareness of relationships between
people."
